An Interview with a Dean Athlete: Travis Dinsdale
Travis to start, where are you from?
-I am from Worcester, MA.
What was it like growing up in Worchester?
-I had some good times there, it is a good community filled with friendly people, but there was some adversity that shaped me into who I am today.
What kind of adversity was that?
-The school system wasn’t the easiest, but I always knew I wanted to play baseball and continue my education.
Where’d you go to school before you came to Dean?
-Worcester Tech, I got my certificate in HVAC and then went to Quinsigamond Community College where I got my associates in Business. I didn’t plan on going for my bachelor’s, but when I got an offer to play baseball at Dean College, I liked the campus and atmosphere, and decided to change my mind and pursue a bachelor's degree.
Oh, you play baseball? What position are you?
-Centerfield
Now, as a transfer student who plays one of the “leadership” positions in baseball, what does it mean to you that the younger players look up to you, given you are the only Junior on the team?
-It means a lot that I could spread my passion for the game. I just want to show them that hard work can get these guys to better places, no matter what circumstance they may be dealing with, not just with baseball, but with anything.
How do you go about your business? Are you a quiet leader? Do you lead by example? Or are you vocal when you see your teammates not doing what they’re supposed to be?
-I like to lead by example, but if I see any of my teammates slacking or goofing off, I won’t hesitate to push them verbally to better themselves.
Are there any players in baseball that you look up to?
-I like to model myself after Mookie Betts, the outfielder for the Red Sox. We play a similar game. We both have a good speed/power combo and put a huge emphasis on our defensive ability.
Is defense something you take pride in?
-Of course, defense wins championships!
What do you want to get out of this upcoming season?
-I’d love to have fun and personal success, but overall the most important thing and the thing I want the most is to win a championship with the boys. That’s why I play: to win.
Travis thank you, and best of luck in the season. I look forward to sharing the field with you!
